I believe you are referring to Captain Nicholas Peddle, who was a bit of a renegade in Wales and was basically run out of the country. He landed in Carbonear in the 1600s when the French and English were fighting for control of Newfoundland and the fishery. At a time when one of the d'iberville brothers were raiding English settlements including the taking of St. John's, Capt. Nick got word that they were heading their way. He gathered all of the settlers onto Carbonear Island and waited for the French to come. When the first Frenchman tried to land, Capt. Nick greeted him with his sword and with that the French decided Carbonear wasn't worth fighting over so they left.
Incidentally, the Evening Telegram in St. John's did quite a huge article on Capt. Nick several years ago because the NFLD Museum has the actual sword that he used to defend Carbonear.
