I am a direct descendant of Claudius Pegues d. 1790 and of his son William d. 1818 through William's daughter Charlotte Hicks Pegues (ca. 1789-1864), who married John Miles King (1780-1825).
I have autosomal DNA on file at 23AndMe and at FamilyTree DNA. I would like to compare DNA with anyone who think they are descended from Courtney's son Martin, or any of the other slaves held by the Pegues family.
This past year I was contacted by a woman with tri-racial heritage. She is a customer of 23AndMe.We share a short sequence of DNA on one chromosome. Her oldest identified ancestors lived in the same places and times as the Pegues family and William Pegues' estate inventory had slaves with first names the same as has come down to her by other means.
My heritage, according to 23AndMe is 100% European and that agrees with what I know of my ancestors, so far.It is possible that the sequence I share with the woman mentioned above entered her gene pool in the 20th century, not the 18th or 19th century...more research is needed.
