Eliza Jane was 14 when she married I.M.Smith. They had 7 children-3 died in infancy. I.M. fought for the Union during the Civil War and marched with Sherman to the sea. He was reported missing in action in New Orleans. He actually went on to Brownsville and then came dragging home 3 months later. Eliza Jane died in Missouri while visiting family there. They lived together 63 years and he married again in less than 1 year. He died in less than a year following the 2nd marriage which was to Mrs. Hattie Clark. He died at the family residence in Stronghurst, Henderson county, Illinois on 29 September 1914. He was 81 years, 10 months, and 7 days.
He was born near Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois 22 November 1832. While young moved to Plymouth, Mc
Donough County, Illinois. 10 June 1852 he wed Eliza Jane Pendarvis daughter of Samuel Fleming and Mary "Polly" Garrett Pendarvis. Their children were:Idelia, James, Samuel and Ella. I.M. Smith is buried in the South Prarie Cemetary 3 3/4 miles north of Raritan, Henderson County, Illinois.
