My g-g grandfather is Alford Peanick, g-grandfather is Benjamin Franklin Peanick and my grandfather is William Peanick. The family has always claimed to be Scot-Irish which has been verified. The family is originally from Northern Scotland in Nainshire, just east of Inverness. In fact, the family farm still exists and can be located on Google Map by typing "Penick Farm Scotland". The family indeed split during the Civil War with one branch moving to the west coast and changing the spelling to Pennick. I've seen a copy of the newspaper article on the Pennick/Peanick reunion that recounts this rift. The first spelling of "Peanick" that I've documented was an 1840's land deed issued by the Bureau of Land Management. The original can be seen on the BLM website.
