John Penick's Father Alabama

I'm attempting to find records on the grandfather of Hugh Thomas Penick (b. 1856 d. 1932) in Alabama.I found a post that stated his father was John Penick and that he died was shot and died in his home at towncreek al trying to stop the union army from burning towncreek april 3 1863. Trying to go as far back as the online records can take me.thx for any help.
