Penland North Carolina

Does anyone have the story of how Penland, North Carolina came to be called "Penland"?Was that area, land that originally belonged to a Penland Family?{I seem to remember reading that it may have been John Penland who lived near there & was having trouble with the Cherokee Indians and supported the tribe moving to Oklahoma.]Am I all mixed up, or what?I'd like to know the story anyway!Thanks
