I have no information on his correspondence during the Civil War. Pennypacker Mills in Montgomery COunty may be able to help.
His military exploits are recounted in an article that I wrote for the 'Germantown Crier', the publication of The Germantown Historical Society www.libertynet.or/ghs as well as in the official history of the 97th PA Inf and books and articles on the fight at Fort Fisher where he won the Congressional Medal of Honor. You can obtain his military records from NARA.
The general was very young when he went into the army and never married and I have heard nothing of any relationships with women. He was wounded seriously in the hip in the war and the wound never healed and he ultimately died of it.
