Hello Michael,
It's nice to see a posting from someone in the "Old Country".
I'm descended from a Rev. Francis Peppard, who left Dublin in 1742, settling in New Jersey.
Here's a question for you and for anyone else who is reading this followup.I say we are the namesake of the Pipard brothers, (Gilbert, William, Peter,(Piers)and Roger), who first came to Ireland in the company of Prince John in the late 1100's, with Gilbertbeing given vast tracts in County Louth, with Ardee as the headquarters. When Gilbert died in Brindisi, Italy on the way home from the 3rd Crusade his lands were given tohis brother,Peter, and then on to Roger and then to a nephew, William, who reportedly helpedrebuild the TRIM castle in 1225 for the DeLacys after he married one of their daughters.
There is an oft-repeated claim, apparently which began in a geneological work by Betham, that the Peppards are actually the descendents of a different Norman settler, and that one of the sons of this settler just took the name Peppard. This story sounds peculiar and I have never seen any backup information to support it, but since it is in an influential book it seems to get repeated often by other researchers who just take it as fact. What do you think?
All best, Vince
