Re: Hi there other Pestridge's...
I am descended from William and Mary Pestridge (nee Saunders) through their daughter, Mary, who married Thomas Hunt in Hampton in Arden, Warwicks., in 1810.
Before the birth of the William and Mary's children, the surname Pestridge is not recorded on IGI anywhere in the British Isles. After puzzling about this fact for many months, I have come to the conclusion that this surname is probably a corruption of Prestidge/Prestige/Prestage, with transposition of the letter 'r' in the name. (Another possible variant is Prestridge - with two 'r's.)It seems eminently reasonable to suppose that the original spelling of William's surname became 'corrupted' by a simple misspelling or misrecording by the parish incumbent in Knowle, perhaps as a result of poor articulation in his local Warwickshire speech on William's part, and the new spelling 'stuck' with the birth of each succesive Pestridge child.
In our research we estimated William 'Pestridge' to have been born about 1745.We located on IGI a William Prestidge who was born in the village of Priors Hardwick, near Southam, Warwick. in 1747.Priors Hardwick lies about 20-25 miles from Knowle, where William and Mary settled and later Pestridge generations were to be found, before the move to Birmingham in the second half od the 19th century. It would have been quite possible for this William Prestidge to have moved to the Knowle-Solihull area. (It has been suggeted by a couple of my contacts that there is also a possible link with the village of Brailes,in S. Warwickshire, near Shipston on Stour, but unfortunately no William Prestidge is recorded in the Brailes parish register in the right timeframe.)
The marriage of William PRESTIGE and Mary Saunders is recorded at Hampton in Arden on 5 Nov. 1771, and this date fits well with the birth of the couple's first child, Sarah,
(who unfortunately died in her first year)in 1772.It seems likely that all later Pestridge families in Warwickshire/W. Midlands and beyond descend from William and Mary Pestridge through their sons, James and William.
