Thank you so much for your extensive information! Some was new to me, especially the name of Robert Pettigrew’s wife Hannah. I have been to Westmoreland County, PA hoping to uncover Jacob’s father and/or connection to another Pettigrew. Jacob is listed in the Westmoreland Co., N. Huntingdon tax records from 1822-1825. In 1829-1833 he switches to Hempfield Twp., and in 1837 changes counties appearing in Madison Twp. Armstrong, Co. PA.
John Pettigrew (son of Jacob and Elizabeth Pettigrew) was born in 1829 and died 1891. He served in the 155th Regiment, Company K during the civil war. John Pettigrew is buried in Kellersburg Methodist Cemetery, Kellersburg, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. His wife is Martha Moore Pettigrew 1831-1929. In an attempt to locate both John and Jacob Pettigrew’s burial plots I visited Armstrong County and interviewed Pastor Jay, of Kellersburg Methodist Church, as well as both the former and current caretakers of the cemetery. It was the current caretaker who was able to show me the original plot map (a rather large document, rolled and fragile) with the Petticrew name and location listed.John and Elizabeth’s graves were verified, and six other Pettigrew graves remain unmarked. Whether Jacob Pettigrew is buried there remains a mystery. We were out in a very rural section of Pennsylvania, and not able to copy the document at that time.
As for the DNA results, I am sure there are many more who can interpret them to a higher degree than I, but I will share what I have. My mother’s cousin agreed to be a part of the Family Tree Pettigrew Project. He tested 12, 25, 37 originally and recently 67 markers. I tend to discount the 12 marker test and focus more on the higher markers for genealogy. At 25 markers her cousin matched four Petticrews and three Pettigrews exactly (plus many more with distance of 1, 2, and 3).
I contacted George Ambrose Petticrew when we received the DNA outcome and his reaction was “The really interesting result is that the members of our Petticrew Family (who have used the “c” spelling for at least 10 generations) show up in the DNA tests to be the exact same family as the Pettigrews!” George stated that the three (fourth match came later) Petticrew matches were all descendants of John Finley Petticrew, and the Pettigrews were descendants of a Thomas Pettigrew of Orange County, NC, John W. and an Unknown Pettigrew. When we reviewed the 37 markers, our identical match was with a Petticrew, again descendant of John Finley Petticrew. By using the Family Tree formula, I believe that our MRCA (most recent common ancestor) occurs by an 83.4% chance in 4 generations, or 97.2% chance within 8 generations. To get to 99.5% it takes twelve generations. We do not have 67 marker test to compare with this individual unfortunately. If I have misinterpreted the results, please advise.
I had a separate individual review our results and his comment of the 25 marker test states “Your cousin matched 6 men exactly at 25 of 25 DNA markers, 3 Petticrew and 3 Pettigrew. Ten or more others matched him at 24 of 25 markers. All of these men sharing this many markers in common with the same or slightly different surname are definitely related in a genealogically meaningful timeframe, some certainly within the last couple of hundred years.”
As for Robert Pettigrew of N. Huntingdon Twp., Westmoreland Co., he is listed as Robert Peticrew in an 1812 Tax record, Robert Petegrewe in 1817-18, Robert Pettecrue in 1820, Robert Pettigrew in 1821. The two spellings continue interchangeably from 1822-1826, and appears as Pettigrew with one exception up to 1842. I did not find any tax records after that year. In 1816 his children were listed as poor children in the N. Huntingdon Twp. tax records. Children listed were Simon, William and Anna Pettycrew, but no Jacob. In 1822 John, Ann and William and in 1824 John, Andrew and Joshua are listed. From 1826-1831 Andrew, Joshua, Joseph and Jesse appear. Their surname is both Petticrew and grew.
I have searched the Will abstracts for Westmoreland, but have not yet found Robert Pettigrew listed. If I read your notation on Hannah Pettigrew correctly it listed her as born in VA. An 1880 census record for Jacob Pettigrew living in his daughter’s household (Lucinda McCartney) indicates he was born in PA and both of his parents were born in PA.
It would be fantastic to make that final connection with either Robert Pettigrew, or whoever Jacob’s father truly is.
