Great obit, sounds like a wonderful woman... not one word about who her parents were, who her siblings were or een what her maiden name was.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. Margaret W. Phelan, widow of Dr. William J. Phelan, formerly of Troy, died peacefully on June 3, 2004 at her son's residence in Gainesville, Fla. She was 98 years young and the matriarch of the Phelan family. Mrs. Phelan was born on February 13, 1906 in Yonkers, N.Y. and graduated from the College of Mt. St. Vincent in New York City. She was a faculty member of Roosevelt High School in Yonkers, St. Joseph's College in Deembacton, Va. and St. Petersburg Junior College in Clearwater, Fla. Mrs. Phelan was the past president of the Troy Housing Authority, St. Mary's Hospital Seton Woman's Auxiliary, the Catholic Women's Service League and the St. Augustine's Mothers Club. She moved to Clearwater in 1969 following the retirement of her husband from his active surgery practice in Troy. She was active in numerous community service activities while raising her family of six boys in Troy and was officially recognized for her contributions with the naming of one of the first low-income family housing complex in Troy in her honor. She was a daily communicant at St. Augustine's Church in Lansingburgh as well as Light of Christ Church in Clearwater during her later years. Survivors include her sons, Bill Phelan (Mildred) of Troy, Paul Phelan (Mary Anne) of Spring, Texas, Arthur Phelan (Leslie) of Albany, Tom Phelan (Elizabeth) of Cape May, N.J., Joseph Phelan (Patricia) of Gainesville, Fla. and Michael (Sally) of Scottsdale, Ariz.; 18 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. from St. Augustine's Church where the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery, Troy. Friends are invited and may call at the Frank P. McDonald & Son Funeral Home, 870 Second Avenue (between 124th and 125th Streets) in Lansingburgh on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m.
