Hi Joan,

I am thrilled to get your message. My outgoing email is currently out of commission. Incoming is okay. Please reply to rebecca355@msn.com.My John Marshall Phillips, g-great grandfather, was also in Orr's Rife Regiment. He enlisted in 1861 at the age of 25.I am currently transcribing his diaries that cover periods from September, 1861 to December, 1864.Family "legend" has him at Appamattox with Lee at the surrender. So all of the Phillips served together. The John Marshall Phillips' diaries are in the collection of the Hargrett Rare Manuscript and Book Library at the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga.The director is Mary Ellen Brooks. She also has other letters and papers of JM Phillips.

If you would like a transcript of the diaries after I complete them, please send me a mailing address to me email.

My great grandmother was the daughter of John Marshall Phillips and Maria Sullivan-Burress.Her name was Martha Elizabeth Phillips. She married Thomas Richard Isbell and lived her entire life in what is now Stephens County, Toccoa, Georgia. My father is the executor of the estate of Frances Isbell, unmarried daughter of Martha Elizabeth , "Mattie," and T. R. Isbell. While we were cleaning out the family home in Toccoa, I came across the diaries. They are a fasicinating account of the day to day life of a soldier.John Marshall entered service as a Sergeant and was promoted to Lieutenant.I have his battle map of Virginia, 1861 and the library has his muster roll and letters home during that period.

I have photos that I have been unable to identify. The last surviving child of Mattie and John Marshall died this year in Hiawassee, Georgia.I had shown the photos to her, but she was unable to id.

There are periods of time missing from the diaries.I would like todetermine where John Marshall was during these lapses.

I agree that Levi was probably born in the US and his wife, Barbara Hough was German.I have a relative in Atlanta that has also researched this line. Her name is Eloise Orr.(Mrs. Samuel Jones Orr)Her address was 3607 Cantrell Road, NE, Atlanta, Ga. 30319.I was in contact with her daughter, Lisa who married David Dwayne Bell in the mid 80's.Lisa was attempting to join the DAR in the early 90's.She could possibly be located thru the NSDAR.My NSDAR # is652767 and my grandmother, Mary Sadie Isbell Acree's number was 311216.

My records are from my g-grandmother, Martha Emily Phillips Isbell.During the 1930's she was corresponding with cousins about their ancestors. Most of my papers are in her handwriting and were found in the Isbell family Bible.

Eloise Phillips Orr is descended from George Sullivan Phillips, a son of John Marshall Phillips and Maria Sullivan-Burres.George "Sully" and my Martha Emily "Mattie" were siblings.

Thanks you so much for the will and pension request. My Dad will love this.I have been able to trace the paternal (Acree/ Martin) branch of his tree but have not worked on the maternal (Phillips/Isbell).

Eloise supplied me with the birthplace of Levi as Germany.I do not know where she got it.

My hometown, Toccoa, Georgia is located about 20 miles west of Westminister-Walhalla-Seneca, South Carolina. My mother's father is buried in Pendleton, SC although there is no relationship between the two families (Acree & Edwards).Toccoa is now in Stephens County. At the time of John Marshall and his generation, Stephens County was still a part of Franklin and Habersham Counties, Ga.I'm not sure where Tabor, Ga. was then or is now.

My records indicate that John Marshall Phillips, son of Geo. Washington Phillips who was the son of Levi and Barbara, was born in South Carolina. He enlisted in the Confederate army in South Carolina. He married in South Carolina 2 years after returning from the war.His three oldest children, George (Sully), Margaret (Polly) and Mamie were all born in South Carolina. My g-grandmother however was born in Franklin Co, Georgia (now a part of Stephens Co.) Her three younger siblings were all born in Carnesville, Franklin Co, Ga.

Do you know where John Marshall Phillips is buried? He died in 1920.Do you know if there are Phillips still living in the Westminister-Walhalla-Anderson, SC area?
How did your branch get to Tennessee?

I now live in South Georgia. However, my g-grandparents (Mattie Phillips & TR Isbell ) and grandparents (Mary Sadie Isbell and WR Acree) all lived in Toccoa, Georgia and are buried there. My father and cousins still live in Toccoa.I'm going up there at Thanksgiving.

Please write back.My outgoing email should be functioning soon hopefully.I've downloaded the will and pension. Thanks,Rebecca Acree
