Tom, you say that "the records show that Nellie DOUGLAS married three times, each time to an elderly widower."Could you give us all the particulars of Nellie DOUGLAS's three marriages? How old was Lester PHILYAW and how old was she? When and where did she marry David CLARKE?Whom, when, and where did she marry the third time? What can you tell us about Nellie's birth date and place and where she lived before and during her marriages?
Your query is puzzling me.If Lester PHILYAW was an old widower when she married him, he can't be the only Lester I found in the 1900 and 1910 Jefferson Co. AL censuses; according to the 1900 census, this Lester PHILYAW was born in Nov 1893, which would have made him only about 24 at the time of Nellie's marriage.
Another puzzle:I did find a household of a David and Nellie CLARKE in the town of Prichard in the 1930 Mobile Co. AL census. However, the "elderly widower" tag doesn't seem to fit him, either:
1930 AL Mobile Co.Prichard12-Dist, sheet 17B,hh 349-381 CLARKE, Davidhead57m at 21no yesMS MS MS --Nelliewife55m at 33AL AL AL --Fosterson21sAL MS AL --Priceson17sAL MS AL
(Living next door is DOUGLAS, J. Frankhead26sAL AL AL --Marymother54widAL US US --Williebrother21sAL AL AL)
I had been assuming that DOUGLAS was Nellie's maiden name, but you didn't actually say that; and, according to the 1930 census, the ages at which David and Nellie entered into their first marriages don't fit anything; he seems to be giving his age at his first marriage, and she seems to be giving her age at her marriage to David CLARKE.
Am I simply finding the wrong Lester PHILYAW and the wrong David CLARKE, or misreading the entries, or adding and subtracting years wrong?I hope you can straighten me out!
