Re: Phips and Long 1840 Indiana
After years of research I located a Long family document which statea that John Long was already married when he came to North Carolina and Virginia. The document does not provide a name.
Secondly, Jefferson Long left the New River Valley and went to Indiana in the 1820's. He remained there for seveal years, but returned to northwest Virginia in the 1850's where he remained until the 1870's. He then returned to the area where he was born, which is in present day Alleghany County, North Carolina, near Laurel Springs.
John Long, Sr. lived for several years in Montgomery County (present day Grayson County) Virginia. I have several land grants, deeds, and surveys which confirm this information. He then moved just inside the N. C. state line and lived out his life on the north side of the New River. He died in October, 1836. I've actually visited his grave site on the farm where he lived. His headstone is marked.
Land Grants, tax records, and deeds document the fact that numerous members fo the Phipps Family lived near g,g,g,g grandpa John Long, Sr., both in Virginia and in North Carolina. Also, there's a record of his estate sale following his death. Several members of the Phipps family made purchases at the sale. Each item is described with a purchase price and the name of the purchaser.
Hope this helps. Johnny Long
