Swain County Herald (Swain Co. NC) Thursday, July 25, 1889:

"William Weddington, colored, was hanged in the county jail at Charlotte [NC] Thursday for the murder of Policeman Pierce in Monroe, Union County, on the night of May 5th 1888."
