Looking for info on an Old Cemetery In Pickett County, TN or Clinton County, KY
Looking for info on an Old Cemetery In Pickett County, TN or Clinton County, KY Lee-Means-Griffin-Cross and Pierce.
A long time ago a cousin, of mine, went to Albany, Clinton County, KY and met up with a distant cousin who took her to where our great grandmother Rebecca Lee born Jul 08, 1858 Clinton County, KY and died Nov 10, 1930 Clinton County, KY was buried. He said it was an old family cemetery often referred to as Lee-Griffin-Means Cemetery, or several versions of those names there of. She thought it was in Clinton County, KY and there were not many stones there, some were only marked with fieldstones. He told her that Rebecca was buried next to her parents Richard Lee born 1806 and Elizabeth Cross Lee born Abt. 1823. They did not have a stone. She did see a head stone for a R. W. Lee born Feb 09, 1857 and died Mar 24, 1918. She took a picture of Rebecca’s stone and one of R. W. Lee’s stone. The cemetery was over grown; it was cold and getting late. So they left, latter on she wished she had taken other pictures of the few other stones that were there. As I stated before she thought they were still in Clinton County, KY, But latter on as I was doing some searches in Picket County, TN it found a listing for my great Grandmother Rebecca Lee listed in the Griffin-Lee Cemetery in Static, Pickett County, TN. I only listed 3 graves; Rebecca’s, Susan Pierce Reeves, and Susan’s second husband Edward Prothero Reeves, II, but no R. W. Lee??? I have no ideal what happened to R. W. Lee’s stone??? I do have a picture of it. And it has always seamed to haunt me as I find myself wondering who he is, and searching for him. I think he may be Richard Wiley Lee even though the birth date is wrong as listed on the stone, which happens from time to time either by the mistake of the maker of the marker, or as often happens when the parents die while the child is young, or as memory plays tricks on us, birthdates were easily forgotten back then. If it was it would be Richard Wiley Lee logical for him to be there as I believe that his mother is probably buried there also, long with several other missing Lee’s. I am hoping some one out there knows something about the old cemetery and maybe we can add a few more names to it, and make a few more connection. I think that there maybe several Lee’s, Cross’s, Griffin’s, Mean’s, Pierce’s and others that were buried there, and a few more names not mentioned. Many very old graves such as Susan Pierce Reeves who was born Sep. 22, 1795 Carter County, TN and probably her parents Hardy Pierce, Sr and wife Susan Cross Pierce, they were also the parents ofRebecca Pierce who married Elisha Cross, parents of Elizabeth Cross Lee. Small area and parts of Cumberland County, KY became Clinton County, KY and Overton County, TN became Fentress and Pickett County, TN then there was the time when the line between KY and TN was disputed. Leaving much confusion as to which state or county that you were born in or where for future genealogist to look for records.
Static, TN lies very near the line between Clinton County, KY and Pickett County, TN. So I have been wondering if maybe part of the old cemetery is in Clinton County, KY. Also I have been wondering if it at one time had been in Clinton or early still in Cumberland County, KY before the counties and state lines were changed. Find A Grave does not list directions to the old cemetery, and it may be on some old farm land taking up space. I hope that it dose not end as some have done where stones are removed and plowed over. Finding some records of who was buried there, might help to save it. I hope someone knows something about the above people and/or about the old cemetery and will contact me here or at [email protected] please include genealogy in subject so I won’t automatically delete your email.
Thanks,
Little Bobby Cat
