new info
Hello Pat. No, I'm not officially doing the research again, but last night I decided to search the web to see if there was anything new, not expecting to find anything, but I DID!!! Don't get too excited... just a couple of records for Overton and his father John in Louisa Co., VA. They were in some pretty fancy company and of course all these folks revolved around the OVERTONs, so I'm more sure than ever we've got an OVERTON ancestor in there somehow -- also a GARLAND. I'm attaching the relevant records below. Archelaus HARRIS was obviously from the family of Capt. Wm Harris and wife Temperance OVERTON as Archelaus and his wife Frances SMITH Harris had dau Barbara OVERTON Harris who married Joel WATKINS (who's also in these deeds with our folks). Archelaus and Frances SMITH Harris also had dau Ann Harris who married Hickerson COSBY who was obviously a grandson of John Cosby and Martha GARLAND of Louisa Co. (whose sister Elizabeth GARLAND married Capt. James OVERTON). Archelaus Harris' wife Frances SMITH was a dau of John Smith and Frances ANDERSON, dau of Bartlett Anderson and Mary COSBY (dau of John Cosby and Martha GARLAND above). Bartlett also had a son GALLANT Anderson and his granddau Ann HARRIS above who married Hickerson COSBY had a son GALLANT Cosby. Hickerson Cosby's sister Elizabeth Cosby married Richard COLE, son of Richard Cole, Esq. and wife Lydia Hansford Hill (Richard later married Lemander ARMISTEAD) and this Richard Cole is in our Overton and John PENIX record. Note Overton signed with a mark. I just plain do not understand this man and his many signatures and now a mark. He was only 20 in 1780 when this deed was witnessed, but old enough to sign, if he knew how (which he obviously did later). I'd like to look at some of those Salisbury (Rowan Co.) deeds he signed PINNIX... could be his doggone name was so long he just signed a mark to save time when it wasn't an important record to him??? Who knows??? But back to those names in the deeds... the ARNOLDs tie into all these lines, which could be important... also the names GARLAND/GALLANT and LAWSON pop up quite a bit... PETTY too... and note GIBSON and TALLEY. Oh yeah... and THOMASSON (near Joseph PENNICKS/PINICKS). Also Wm CORLEY and family... remember Overton Pinnix stated he'd stood in for Zach CORLEY during the revolution for a couple of months. Soooooo close here -- and FINALLY in Louisa Co. with OUR folks. I'm still thinking it's possible Joseph Pennicks was a BROTHER to our John Pinnix and both sons of Edward and Easter Penix of Hanover -- Edward died 1735 with Wm WINSTON his exec. and Wm Winston was in Louisa records with Joseph Pennicks and now in these John and Overton Penix records. Also remember Wm Winston's parents were Wm Winston and Barbara OVERTON. Also John SANDERS (who'd sold land to Edward Penix which was willed to son George Penix who died by 1735 and Easter Penix sold the land to Matthew ANDERSON). We've even got John HOGAN in here! Anyway, sure seems Joseph Pennicks was much closer to OUR family than to John Penix/Mary Mallory of Prince Edward Co. (who's listed as Joseph's brother in the other outlines). Well, do with these what you will. I hope all's well with you and yours. Until later... Grant
