Pittmans of NC

My name is Frances Marion Pittman Sheppard. My father was raised in Rocky Mount NC. His father was raised in Oxford orphanage.I have no idea if we have any Pittman relatives.There was little known about my
grandfather and my father spoke of no Pittman relatives.Surely the orphanage didn't pick the name out of thin air.Any ideas or comments.
