Rhonda & Tammy I would like to refer back to the Cherokee story.I had always heard my gr gr grandmother Nancy PITTS was full blooded Cherokee. When I started doing research I soon found this was impossible.I thought the story started because her mother Martha MEREDITH was part Cherokee I could find Martha's grandmother Mary(CREWS) MEREDITH was half Cherokee but all the hundreds of applications for Indian Lands were turned down for the reason 'She lived as a white woman'.My gr gr grandfather HARROLD(whose son married Nancy's dau) I believe was also descended from Andrew & Martha (STRODE) PITTS was said to be half Indian.I haven't been able to prove anything on him. There are a number of PITTS listed on the Guion Miller Rolls as not Eligible and also some eligilbe ones but they were not full blooded (they were anywhere from 3/8 to 1/32. There are also PITTS listed in Dawes Rolls. I haven't looked at the film on any of their applications to see who they made claim thru.
