John,
Thank you for your reply. I think a large project open to every male with the name Somerset is a good idea and would probably attract many who hope to connect to the Plantagenet line; however, attracting proven male line descendants of John of Gaunt would be far more difficult, since desire to learn one's ancestry is the usual motive for participating in DNA studies.
I know that the West DNA project was offering a free DNA test earlier this year to anyone who could prove descent from the Lords DeLaWarr, and the last time I checked, they had been unable to recruit a participant from this line.Since this is one of my lines, I was also looking for a descendant of the Hon. John West of West Point, Virginia to participate in the Jamestowne DNA project, but have so far been unable to find one.Of course, it's possible that the male line in Virginia is now extinct, but it may also be that descendants aren't interested in DNA or genealogy because they already know their lineage.I know a Wingfield who refused to take the DNA test sponsored by the Wingfield Society for the same reason--he "knew who he was."
Anyhow, I thought of Brian Sykes first because so many people will have seen one of his specials or read one of his books, but if Chris Pomery is well-known in British genealogy circles and could organise a project and get funding for it, he might prove to be a valuable ally.
I do have a list of possible participants, but have not tried to find addresses for them, because I fear they would be unlikely to respond favourably and an unfavourable response at this stage might prejudice them against responding favourably at some future date if ever a suitable project were organised.
I hope that your article in Nomina will stimulate more interest in this subject.A large group wishing to organise a project could work with several different ancient European families, not just Plantagenets.
Lindsey
