I'm hoping someone can help me understand Poland in 1880-1900.First, was it under Russian rule?I have relatives listed on the census in 1920 and 1930 (USA) as "Polish-Russian", so I'm guessing that they were from Poland, but it was run by the Czar at their time of immigration, is that correct?
Also, if they lived in the area of Warsaw, where would they most likely depart from for NYC?Was it Bremen, Hamburg?
A question too about the Polish pronounciation. Is there a website which tells one how to pronounce the letters of the alphabet?I have viewed the surname I'm studying spelled so many ways that I wondered if "D" and "Th" might be similar sounding in Polish language.
