Eire,
If the father of your Leon Janicki was Tomasz Janicki, so maybe "my" EI database shot wins this game, see from my message:
"Leon Jamicki (the correct is Janicki), arrvd NY port 1909, 18 y old, brown hair, blue eyes, going to the US to uncle Franciszek Janicki 820 Wall Str. Chicage IL, living in Poland Tomasz Janicki (father?) in Pogorzela/Pogorzele(?)."
If yes, maybe the correct place of origin is Pogorzela, now located in the Poznan - Posen province:

So, here is the image of the Polish family ancestral holy church where your Leon was baptized, and where all family attended every Sunday to have the holy Sunday mass, just try to imagine this date at this church:

One points confusing is if this Pogorzela was the part of Russia or Germany, matter needs deeper search, I'm not sure for now, but maybe this was on the border between Germany and Russia, and Pogorzela/e Kal. means the place in the Kalisz - Kaliska Gubernia - Province of Russia.
If this Pogorzela is correct - send a symbolic Christmas Gift to Santa Claus for all of us!! :)
