John,
My ancestors also were from Polany (Krosno), most if not all were ethnic Lemkos displaced after WW2 to now Lviv, Ukraine & Siberian Russia. I am currently trying to contact these relatives. Greg Gressa compiled a knowledge base for Lemko Surnames & Villages as part of the web site
http://carpatho-rusyn.org/http://carpatho-rusyn.org/
Under the "Lemko" section click on "Villages and Surnames" that will take you to the "Lemko Village Resource Guide". Look on page 2 village #235 is Polany (Krosno). Matala appears to be a Lemko surname. Is it possible these were your relatives? I will try to copy & paste a post with the info from 1787 Austrian Cadastral Records listed in a seperate message.

Best regards,
Mark
