Corey,
I'm not sure how accurate this is, but in the book "The McLeods, A Family History" by Carolyn Tumber, on pages 37-38 is the following excerpt:
"Jane had been raised as Ojibway (her mother's tribe), and had followed the culture completely. She spoke fluent French and Ojibway. At the time of here marriage to Alex, she lost here status because Alexander was Metis. When the government officials came to Flying Post Reservation to enumnerate the native people, she was emphatic that she did not want to be on their lists because they had taken her status away."
I hope this helps.
