New Info on HUMPHREY POPE of VA

After a year's work, researchers have found serious errors in printed articles/books about HUMPHREY POPE of Westmoreland Co VA. A full report will be posted & published this summer, but the following errors need immediate correction, as they are still spreading via the Internet.

ERROR in "Genealogical Memoranda of the Quisenberry Family", by A.C. Quisenberry, pub. 1897:

HUMPHREY POPE appears as surity on a bond of John Quisenberry in Rappahannock (now Richmond) county, dated May 12,1663"
FACT:The ACTUAL date of this document is May 12, 1683.(Rapp. Deeds, Wills & Settlements, 1677-1687)

ERRORS in "HUMPHREY POPE & HIS DESCENDANTS", Wm. & Mary Quarterly, Series 1, Vol 13, 1907

"He obtained land from THOMAS POPE for 150 acres near the Clifts in Westmoreland county Feb 2, 1659"FACT:The ACTUAL date of this deed is 2 Feb 1669, ten years later.(W'moreland Deeds, 1653-1671, Bk 1:356-359)

States that Humphrey Pope was security for John Quisenberry "May 12, 1656" FACT: the correct date was 12 May 1683.

States "Humphrey died about 1695".FACT: Humphrey SR died by 30 Oct 1684, when his widow ELIZABETH came into court & proved his will (W'moreland Order Book 1675-1688/9). The Last record of Humphrey alive was 12 May 1683 in W'moreland Co.

"LAWRENCE, eldest son of Humphrey Pope..."FACT:In a deed dated 27 Jul 1704, JOHN POPE, son of Humphrey SR, identified his brother HUMPHREY JR as "eldest son of Humphrey Pope dec'd" (W'moreland Deeds & Wills #3, 1701-1707)

States Humphrey Pope & Elizabeth Hawkins had "daughter JEMIMA, who married Nicholas MINOR".FACT: The Jemima who married Nicholas Minor was born Jemima WADDY/WADDEY, dau of Thomas Waddey of Northumberland Co VA. She married 1st, John Spence, 2nd, Lawrence Pope, 3rd, Nicholas Minor.Document dated 27 May 1702 identifies her as Lawrence Pope's wife "and relict of John Spence" (W'moreland D&W #3, 1701-1707). A deed dated 28 Jun 1712 identifies Lawrence Pope's wife JEMIMA as "daughter & heir of THOMAS WADDY" (W'moreland D&W, 1712-1720).A deed dated 30 Nov 1737 identifies Nicholas Minor's wife Jemima as "the late relict of LAWRENCE POPE" (W'moreland D&W 1723-1738)

Author failed to name HUMPHREY POPE's other daughter MARY,"orphan of Humphrey Pope dec'd" (W'moreland Order Book 1698-1705)

The 5 children of HUMPHREY POPE SR were HUMPHREY JR, ELIZABETH (md. 1. Wm.Payne, 2, Danl McCarty), LAWRENCE, JOHN, and MARY. All are proven through W'moreland Co records that are too numerous to be quoted here.
All these children were born between 1674-1684.Humphrey Pope SR probably married Elizabeth Hawkins about 1673.

By his own deposition, HUMPHREY POPE SR was born about 1648.He was "24 or thereabouts" in 1673.(W'moreland Deeds, Patents, Etc, 1665-1677)He was NOT a son of Col. Nathaniel Pope of Westmoreland Co VA.

ERROR in "PAYNES OF VA" by BROOKE PAYNE:
States that Elizabeth (Pope) Payne-McCarty, dau of Humphrey SR, was born "1667".FACT: She was born 1677, as her tombstone attests.She was the eldest daughter of Humphrey & Elizabeth.
