My ggg grandfather, John Payne (Pain), married an Elizabeth, probably Porter, in Caroline Co. MD in July, 1778. In the 1790 Caroline Co. census is a Colliston (Collison) Porter along with John Pain.John and Elizabeth had a son they named Collison Payne. About 1795 John and Elizabeth moved to Rowan County NC. Collison Porter moved to NC about the same time.
In Rowan Co. NC there lived a Lawrence Porter who had formerly lived Rockingham Co. NC where Collison Porter (who named a son,Lawrence)lived for awhile.Lawrence and his friend, Ransom Dudley, according to reports, had moved to Rowan County, NC together.
About 1800 John Payne bought land on Lick Creek NC(in the same general area where Lawrence Porter lived)with Ransom Dudley as a witness. In 1801, Isaac Payne, Jr., who had formerly lived in Caroline Co. MD died.John Pain was appointed administrator of his estate with Ransom Dudley giving bond of 300 lbs. When John Pain sold his Lick Creek land in 1808, Lawrence Porter was a witness.(John and Elizabeth also named a son, Lawrence.)
About 1808 John Payne and his sons, many of whom had married girls from Lick Creek NC families, moved to Smith County TN.Later John and many of his sons (He had eight total.I can account for six.) moved to MO.John Payne and his grandson, James, (my great grandfather) settled in Boone Co. MO.(James' father, Collison, died in Smith Co. TN in 1814,)Another son of John, John Payne Jr., named one of his sons, Collison, I assume after his brother, Collison Payne.
Based on the personal interactions, naming patterns, and common geographic locations I am certain that John Payne and his wife, Elizabeth, are related to both Collison and Lawrence Porter. I would be happy to provide details on any of the above statements.
