After replying to you I check census and GRO records, and my speculation about Thomas Cummins being the son of Eliabeth Postgate is correct. I found him living in Hutton Henry with ihs mother in 1861, and on his own in 1871 and 1881 and I think he died in qtr ending Dec 1889 (vol 10a p66). Therefore Elizabeth might have been a widow when she married Francis Postgate. (Correction- the qtr she died was Dec 1865)
Regarding Nicolas Postgate; I've yet to find a link. I've only got back one more generation to Francis Posket of Sedgefield who died in Bishop Middleham in 1752. My speculation is that there is a common root, and his branch migrated north as collieries opened.
