John Potter was a lawyer in the portion of Lunenburg that became Mecklenburg County, VA in 1765.John was an administrator of the will of Thomas Hawkins who died on 1 May 1759;Thomas' wife Mary (Howard) Hawkins subsequently married John Potter 6 months later on 16 Oct 1759.
John & his wife Mary had 6 children (according to a biography of Hon. Henry Potter, who claimed he is one of siz children).in the Lunenburg/Mecklenburg deed books, John and his (probable) family members witnessed a number of land transactions.
1.Lewis (1764 - ??), who witnessed transactions in 1781.I know nothing about him, including whether he married or had children. 2.Henry (1766-1857) moved to Wake County and became a federal judge. He married Sylvia Easton in 1799. 3.Moses Potter (?? - ??)who witnessed transactions with John in 1774.I'm not sure, but I believe him to be a son of John.Could be a brother. 4.William (?? - ??), 5.Archibald (?? - ??), who married Lemender Harris in 1795 with (his cousin?) Thomas as best man.He served as Quartermaster under Gen. Jackson in New Orleans during the War of 1812. 6.Betsy Potter (1770-??), who married Benjamin Hillyard 21 Nov 1790, with (her brother?) Lewis Potter as best man.
John's brother Abram/Abraham & wife Sarah witnessed several transactions with John in 1771/1772;Abraham married Sarah Hawkins, spinster,on 6 Feb 1771, with John Potter listed as security.
John also had a brother William (1743-1778/9) who witnessed several transactions in Lunenburg (1762) and later Mecklenburg (split off from Lunenburg in 1765) in 1771/1772.Williammarried Elizabeth Barr in Granville, NC on 9 Nov 1773.
A generation earlier, Daniel Potter in list of tithables in Lunenburg in 1748, and Lewis Potter in 1748, 1749, and 1750.This is a different Lewis than John's son born in 1764.Daniel Potter is on a list of tythables in Granville County, NC for 1754 (listed with Littlebery Woodlif for a total of 2 tithes);several Potters moved from VA to Granville County, NC in that time frame.I suspect the above Potters are all related.Does anybody have information that would tie John Potter to either Daniel or Lewis.
Any information on the above collection of Potters would be most appreciated.
