Powdrill 1877 v Price 1877
Am trying to trace my Maternal grandmother's tree & have a problem....don't we all?
Her maiden name is Louisa Price, born in Ruddington in 1877, daughter of George & Elizabeth Price and with brothers Emanuel, William & sisters Sarah Ann & Amelia. The Parents, Emanuel & Amelia were all born in Gotham whilst the other family members were Ruddington born.
This all ties in very nicely with the 1891 census index, but in the 1881 census, the whole family goes under the name of Powdrill. I know these facts to be 100% correct as I have the family bible, which records all of the births. At the back of the bible, everyone is a Powdril, & at the front, hey presto, the same names & d.o.b's, but now they are all Price's.
My only conclusion is that some dark deed occurred in another branch of the family, and so father George changed his family's name to Price in order to distance himself from the bad guys.
Obviously this is pure guesswork on my part, & I wonder if there are any Powdrills out there who can throw any light on this situation.
Yours Hopefully, Colin.
