Re: POWELL/HINSON/CHOATE Maury Co.
This is so interesting. The names do coincide, but nothing I have is connected to Mississippi. And - I know the Choctaw and the Cherokee came from the same general area, but how related are they? I have nothing about Choctaw, only Cherokee.
This is the information from June Powell Orton, and I cannot tell how it relates to what you give us:
Ambrose3 (Lewis2, Ambrose1), born 1802 in NC and Nancy ___ had children:
1. Lewis4 b 1828 TN
2. Peter4 O. b 1832 AR
3. John4 b 1833 AR
4. Isham4 b 1835 AR [June refers to another Isham,Lauderdale Co TN in 1870 shown as b 1834 KY with wife Ann b 1844 TN and with Emma Powel b1867 TN, Allice Powl b 1869 TN, Virginia Powel b1870 in TN; with Aleroy Coffe, b 1860 AR in household. Listed next to Decatur & Elizabeth (Powell) Jones. She wondered if this were the same Isham.)
5. Elizabeth4 b 1837 AR
6. Mahala b 1839 AR
7. Ambrose4 b1841 AR [md Minerva FOSTER 1 Jun 1865. See messages #7461 and 7845 on this forum.]
8. Nancy4 b 1844 AR
9. Andrew4 b1848 AR
See that this Isom/Isham has brothers Peter O. and John, although not a Will.
As far as I can tell, the father Ambrose3 above would not have been full=blood. If we are correct about the marriage of Lewis2 to Betsy Choat/Choate/Shoat who has been claimed to be Cherokee/Choctaw, then Ambrose3 would have been only half-blood.
I just noticed that, in message #7866 that the OK Historical Society shows that the claim of Cherokee citizenship was denied because "they had no previous contact with the nation." I wonder whether that was because they mistakenly claimed Cherokee instead of Choctaw. ??
