Mary,

I went back over the documents of Rose Teagarden, Winnie Foland and Jennie Cox and here is their statements.

1.Jennie Cox MCR 6295, 23 years old in 1902, born Ark.

Father is James Ambrose Powell 1/4 Choctaw s/o Isom Powell s/o Ambrose Powell 1/2 Choctaw who is married to Nancy.
The Commission told her that Ambrose must be Full Blood if her father was 1/4.

2.Winnie Foland MCR 5449, 19 years old in 1902, born Ark.

Father is James Ambrose Powell who would be about 45 years old if living s/o Isom Powell and Mary Powell (mary lives in Center Ridge Ark) s/o Ambrose Powell and Nancy.
Father died when she was 8years old in Center Ridge Ark at the home of his mother Mary (about 1891).
She then moved with her mom to Tx and OK until she was 11 years old when she went to live with a Charles Ramsey who could provide for her. They were married in 1900.

Her fathers brother came to see her and his name was John Powell. Her mother Rosa is the same S. E. Carry who married James Ambrose in Arkansas. She doesn't know much about her family history because she has been away from them for so long.

3.Rose Teagarden make application for her son James Henry Powell MCR5121, he is 16 years old in 1902 and going to school in TX. She descibes him as Black hair and black eyes.

James Henry Powell s/o James Ambrose Powell s/o Isom Powell and Mary Jane Powell (living in Ark) s/o Ambrose Powell and Nancy.

James Ambrose Powell died Aug. 5, 1891 at Center Ridge Arkansas and claimed to be 1/4 Choctaw. He had told her he came up here and proved his claim some 20 years ago (about 1880). They were married at Morrowtown Ark on Dec. 17, 1876.

She thinks that Ambrose Powell was born around 1802 in Miss. NOTE: They ask her a bunch of questions here and it is hard to determine which one she is answering, she winds up saying that Ambrose was 1/4 Choctaw and I think she is talking about her James Ambrose. She thinks Ambrose Powell died in Ark.
She says that Isom Powell and Mary Jane lived in Choctaw Nation around 1875 and then went back to Ark.She says that Ambrose Powell and Nancy have lived in IT all their lives.

She says a cousin of Jim (She calls James Jim) Powells named Will lives in Vinita and is on the rolls. Will's son John B. Powell and James Henry Powell are first cousins.

She says that James Ambrose has brothers James and John Douglas Powell.

She says that Isom Powell had brothers Anthony P.Powell (which she later says not Anthony P. because he is colored, it was P.O. Powell)and John Powell. They do a really good job of confusing her.

Now I remember reading that Ambrose Powell and Nancy's son Ambrose Powell (Bro of Isom and P.O. Powell) first made application to the Choctaw Nation. He said his father was Ambrose Powell s/o of Betsey Choat/Shoat and that he ws 1/4 Choctaw. His case was later transferred to the Cherokee and he was denied because he didn't live in Cherokee Nation. This may be why Isoms grandchildren and his wife all thought he was Choctaw.

I know that my greatgrandmther Vinia Alice Mclester Ellis d/o Nancy Alice Couch McAlester d/o Lewis Couch s/o Charity Couch Powell d/o Betsey Shoat and Lewis Powell
always believed that she was Choctaw. She went to all of the Choctaw festivals, knew their language and dances and taught them to her children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. So I was quite suprised when I started researching this family to find out about the Cherokee Connections. My family has always lived in Choctaw and Chickasaw Nation since they were first documented here.

It is always interesting doing this research!
