According to the 1998 _Pratt Directory_ he was born 16 Oct or 16 Nov, 1792.He shows up in the 1850 census in Millwood, Guernsey Co, OH, p 190.He also appears in the 1840 census, same county, but not in the 1830, and Jayne didn't find him in the 1860 census index.I found him just now, or at least a James Pratt, in Caroline Co, MD, 1820 census, p 81.Other Pratts in the county were Christopher, p 88, Joshua, p 74, Nancy, p 90, Peregrine, p 87, Thomas, p 90, and William, p 77.All those Pratt heads of household, and all close together, except William. It sounds like good hunting.
At this point, I suspect that the easy sources are exhausted. You're going to have to search the Caroline County Wills and Deeds, to build up a picture of Pratt relationships. But first read the 1820 census and get a picture of the ages and size of the Pratt households.
As to your GF, family legend can be useful, but you have to treat it as just that, legend. My family simultaneously preserved two fairly detailed, and mutually contradictory, narratives of the first Pratts settling in SE PA as from London, presumably Quakers, and as French Heugonots, becoming Quakers in PA.Turns out they were from the West Riding of Yorkshire, and Anglican, becoming Quakers (ca 1682) => Keithian Quakers (1690) => 7th day Baptists (1695) => Quakers (1720) in turn. [Dates approximate.] You have to dig out the facts, then compare them to family fancy and try to see how the one arose from the other.
