Re: Elizabeth Priaulx, mother of Martha J. McIlyar
I have been researching the families of John and Nicholas PRIAULX, who were brothers and from the parish of Castel (St. Mary de Castro), Guernsey, Channel Islands. They both settled in Adams Township, Guernsey County, in 1837.John moved on to Iowa about 1845 or so; Nicholas stayed behind, and his family was found in Guernsey County, primarily Cambridge.
In addition, John and Nicholas had a half-sister, Rachel, who appears to have emigrated sometime after 1841.She married John Heaume (another Guernsey name)and they lived in Valley Township, Guernsey County.
There were three other PRIAULX who appear to have been siblings who were living in the same household in Adams Township in 1850:John, Nicholas and Mary PRIAULX.John and Mary both died in Cambridge; Nicholas moved on to Iowa.It appears that these people were probably cousins of some sort to John and Nicholas, above.I need to have research done in the parish registers on Guernsey in order to find out.
I suspect that your Elizabeth PRIAULX was perhaps another cousin, and that her parents were PERHAPS Jean Thomas PRIAULX and Marthe MAINDONAL, who were an uncle and aunt of John and Nicholas and were married in 1801.Thus, they were old enough to be Elizabeth's parents.Marthe's sister, Marie, married James Ogier on Guernsey, and they immigrated to Guernsey County, Ohio about 1820.Again, it would be necessary to check the parish registers for Elizabeth's birth; but I strongly suspect that she is from the parish of Castel.
Thanks for your information on the Browns.
