JAMES and ELIZABETH (REED) PROUDFOOT
I would like to know more about James and Elizabeth (Reed) Proudfoot.
James Proudfoot was a son of John Proudfoot (1750-1823) and Leanore Hitt (-1829).John Proudfoot came to America from Scotland as an indentured servant.Passengers To America by Tepper gives: “John Proudfoot, age 24, hairdresser from Scotland, on the ship `Elizabeth' to Virginia from London 14-21 November 1774.”
John Proudfoot, Sr. was granted one hundred acres from Denny Fairfax in Fauquier County, Virginia on 19 November 1791, and married Leanore Hitt in Fauquier County.She was of German descent.After moving to what is now Barbour County, West Virginia, John Proudfoot, Sr. was a miller.They were buried in graves unmarked for many years in the Mary's Chapel Cemetery, “the first graves on the left as you enter through the gate.”Around 1985-1990, descendants erected an nice huge monument at the gravesite.Genealogy Of The Proudfoot Family compiled by Dorsey and Muriel (Cook) Proudfoot was published in 1986 giving detailed genealogy of the John Proudfoot, Sr. lineage.
ARAH JANE PROUDFOOT was born 26 September 1828, a daughter of James Proudfoot (1798-1855), son of John, who married 1827 Elizabeth Reed (1809-1865).Arah Jane married in Barbour County (W) Virginia 1 January 1851 Jeddiah SAYRE who was born 10 August 1828 son of Solomon and Mary Ann (Ball) Sayre.
PETER “McGOWN” PROUDFOOT, born 21 January 1830 to James and Elizabeth (Reed) Proudfoot,married in Barbour County, (West) Virginia, 2 April 1856 Elizabeth SAYRE who was born 2 July 1830 to Solomon and Mary Ann (Ball) Sayre.They lived at Taylor's Drain, Barbour County, and at Holly Grove, Upshur County, West Virginia.Elizabeth died 29 August 1868 and was buried in Taylor's Drain Cemetery.McGown died 22 August 1875 and he was buried in the Sayre family section of Mt. Zion Cemetery in southern Upshur County.A daughter who died in infancy was buried near her mother in the Taylor's Drain Cemetery.
