Re: JAMES PROVINCE - GREENE CO., PA
Thank you very much for the information you sent. I was down in Houston on business for a few days, so I hope you will excuse the tardiness of this reply. I was very pleased to get this data I would indeed like more detail on the childen of Jonathan, James and Lowery if you have it.
I did find the following in the Social Security Death Index: Perry Provins b. Dec. 12, 1898 d. Aug., 1983 at Washington PA (son of Jonathan), Lowrey Provins b. Jan. 31, 1900, living at Martinsburg, PA when died in Jan., 1974 (son of Lowery?) and Andrew b. June 12, 1909 d. Sep., 1968, Uniontown, PA (son of James Andrew?).
We do have a couple of items which do not agree. I have Elizabeth's husband as James R. A. Altman. I did find them in three census records (1870, 1880, 1900) and they had three children. Alvin, Ola and Ora Altman.
Although one early census gives Milford's name as "Millard", I have found him as Milford F. in the 1870 census. He was not yet married.
I did not know about Joseph R.'s second marrige to Jennie Gould. However, by 1900 Joseph is living alone and called a widower in the 1900 census of Nicholson Township, Fayette County, PA.
I'm curious about Pleasant Provance marrying "Myers Altman"? Pleasant was a man and Myers Altman sounds like a man's name. I last found Pleasant unmarried and living in 1870 in the home of his sister and brother-in-law, James and Elizabeth Altman.
I do think there is a problem in the listing of the children of James S. and Susan. There were 13 children, but I do not believe there were two Josephs. The son Jacob b. Apr 3, 1841 and died Dec. 10, 1864 is not listed. I believe he is buried with the parents. Accoding to the 1900 census records, Joseph R. was born in July, 1837. His first wife was Emily. They had eight children (William, James S., Flora B., Jessie L., Robert L., George I., Lorin G. and Fannie L.) and were living in East Bethlehem Township, Washington County, PA in 1860 and at Millsboro, Washington County, PA in 1880. Benjamin was listed in 1900 as born in July, 1838 as I recall. If the year 1837 is correct for Benjamin, it appears Benjamin and Joseph R. were twins. Comments?
Can you tell me where the Brethern Church Cemetery is located? Do you know which township the Mennonite Cemetery is located in Fayette County?
I did find census records for James and Jonathan Provance, sons of James and Susan. James K. and his wife Elizabeth and their daughter Bessie F.(who married a Mr. Roesler)were living in German Township, Fayette County, PA in 1880. Jonathan W. married Elizabeth and they were living with three children (Byron, Boyd, Hazel & one was dead) in Nicholson Township, Fayette County, PA in 1900.
