Re: Puccio and Ligotino in Sicily
Looking for some relatives out there :o)
Cosmo (or Cosimo) Purpura was born March 19th 1873 and Grazia Puccio (his wife, she kept her maiden name) was born February 14, 1875 in San Agata, Sicily (heard though she might have been from Messina/Sicily). Cosmo and Grazia had 10 children Rose & Lena (twins), Mary, Paul, Joseph, Sarah, Angeline, Catherine, John, Connie Cosmo was a huckster, he had a horse and wagon and sold fruit and vegetables around the city of Pittsburgh. Then he worked at Hardies Candies.
He was an awesome cook. He got the experience in the Italian Navy, the personal cook of King Victor Emanuel who at the time was a Prince putting his time in the Navy getting some experience in the Services of Navy and Army. In 1919 or 1920 they lived in Grant Knobs Courtyard in Pittsburgh, the first house behind the Knobs Metalworks Office.
Two of Cosimo’s brothers started the Purpura Banana Co. in Pittsburgh and others went to Milwaukee. He also
said that some of the Purpura' s changed the spelling of their last name because one of the Purpura's was a driver
in a bank robbery and was sentenced to the electric chair because one of the robbers killed a policeman.I believe
he said they changed the last letter a to e.
His son John was my husband's grandfather, whom we called PapPap :o) John's brother Paul was a truck driver for the Fairmont Creamery and brother Joe was a foreman for a company who manufactured different types of dolls and animals out of plaster of Paris for carnivals and circuses.
Then they moved to 2506 25th Street, 2 doors away from O'Hare Candy Store. John worked for a produce company peeling lima beans, the owner's name was Mr. John Dillon.
He went to O'Hara Public School at 25th and Smallman Street. Principal was D.J. Broderick. He graduated after 8th Grade in 1931 and went to trade school, Washington Vocational School at 40th and Butler Street. (one year in Machine Shop Class and two years in Carpenter. PapPap went to war with the 383rd Fighter Squadron, 311th the Fighter Group. Then with the 529th Sqd. "The Flying Tiger" :o) As I'm going through this Journal John's children put together, I found a few more names, relatives: Tom, Fred and Bob Puccio (they must be from Grazia's side). They attended a wedding in 1938 of Skee Barone with Wife Catherine, Maid of Honor -Stella, Best Man Ben Pusateri, Bridesmaid Helen, Usher John Purpura, Bridesmaid Helen.
