I have been looking for information regarding Mary Bell Pugh, dtr og James Pugh who married a henry Frederick Melville(aka fred h. melville, h.f. melville, and lord-only-knows what other aliases) at any rate, I ran across your post here and looked back at the census' I have access to on HeritageQuest. I found a James Pugh in 1820 tenneesee, listing several children, but I don't know if is the same James Pugh. I also saw the same info on the census' in California that you have. I looked up all the DePugh's I could find in all the census' and found several dating back to 1800, but all in New York. Is it possible that your family legend could have gotten the originators of the name confused? by that I mean, instead of James being from France, could it have been his ancestor? I found only one "depugh" listed in 1880, and he was in nebraska. I know how names change over time, and it is often difficult to pinpint where they changed, especially when the people keep moving around on you, and the census records are'nt always very accurate. If I run across any more I will be glad to forward it to you. I would appreciate it if you find any info about Mary Bell Pugh. I think b. about 1849 possibly in California. She married henry Frederick about 1867/68, in Santa Cruz, possibly at Mission Santa cruz. I think she may be the daughter of your James Edward, maybe?
