The following information is about Granville A. Purcell (m. Della Mae Hamilton).
Mamma's parents were Ollie Hamilton and Mary Ann Jarvis. Pappa Granville was born April 25, 1892 to Jim Purcell and Matilda Smith.
In the 1910 Census of Mason County, that Ollie Hamilton, age 34 and Mary, his wife, age 25 were listed with Bessie, 07, Della 05, and Frena no birth given. I believe Frena was the sister who we knew as Aunt Vereen.
In the 1910 Census of Nicholas County, James W. Purcell was listed as age 54, with wife Matilda, age 44. They had Granville, 17; Charles, 14, Homer, 10 and Willard 22.James died in 1911. His death certificate lists his father as Joseph and his mother as Matilda Smith (which is most likely an error because that was Jim's wife's name).
I found by accident, in the 1920 census of Mason County that Matilda had remarried to a Waggoner. The reason I know it's her is that Pappa Granville and mamma were listed as living with Matilda and her new husband in that census.
Sometime after 1920 and before 1925 Granville and Della Purcell Mamma moved to Indiana, near Batesville, where pap pa played semi-pro baseball for some farm team. I have a copy of a picture of him in uniform, but I cannot get the team identified.
I have found a Joseph Purcell in the 1850 census of Nicholas county with wife Elizabeth and children Polly 6, Margaret 4 and Sally Ann 4 months old. This could possibly be James' father, however, James wasn't born until 1854(or 1858), so he is not going to be found on this census. I have not been able to find a link in the 1860 census as yet.
I have found a James William Percell (the spelling often varies) listed on the Later Day Saints site as born 15 July, 1858 to Joseph Percell and Elizabeth Reed Percell. Joseph born 1826 in KY - is the son of Elijah Purcell born 1780 in Pennsylvania and Nancy Powell Purcell born 1778 in Virginia. I found where Nancy and Elijah were married in 6 Aug 1812 in Nicholas County by Thomas Metcalfe. Sons include William J. born 1817 in VA and Joseph born 1826 in KY. I have additional information on Nancy Powell. Nancy Powell was the daughter of Thomas Powell and Nancy Chaney born in Maryland. Besides Nancy, they had John born 1777 in VA, Charles b 1779 in PA, also Isaac, Jeremiah, Robert and another daughter who died in infancy. These last children were born in KY.
If anyone has information related to persons named above, I would be intersted in exchanging.cvicars@earthlink Thanks.
