The last of the Purcell line of Lochmoe Co. Tipperary was Nicholas b.1651 and died 1722. The feudal designation of Baron of Loughmoe, borne by the head of the Purcell family, was not a crown title and thus there survives no complete pedigrees of the sort typical of peerage families. Nor was it one of the families to be the subject of extensive genealogical research in the 18th and 19th centuries, since by 1700 the Purcells, a catholic family, had largely sunk into obscurity. In this regard it is of interest that not one of the Purcell lines treated in the 20th century editions of Burkes Landed Gentry of Ireland can trace its exact relationship to the senior line of the House of Loughmoe. There are 3 Purcell pedigrees in my possession two of which assert a direct descent from the Emperor Charlemagne.
