Was William's wife a BROTHERS or a WILLIAMS?

I've seen it given both ways...Mary Brothers and Mary Williams.....Two separate persons?Or Mary Brothers who had been married to a Williams.....or Mary Williams who had been married to a Brothers?HELP!!!!!
