John Purefoy of Drayton, Leicestershire, and his wife Joan, widow of Sir John Poultney of Misterton, but, by birth, Joan Wistow, were not the parents of the Nicholas Purefoy Esq.,of Shireford (which he sold) and of Shalston, Buckinghamshire.
Nicholas' father is recorded as John Purefoy of Shalston. His mother is not named.

One source is: John Nichols'8 volume work "The History and Antiquities of the County of Leicester". This was published between 1793 and 1811. The relevant pedigrees are in Vol. IV., Pt.II. pp.599-602 (Drayton chapter). They are based on information obtained by Nichols from the family and on Manuscripts in the College of Arms, London.

Godwin, Francis (1562-1633), bishop of Hereford and historian, was born at Hannington, Northamptonshire, the son of Thomas Godwin (1517-1590), later bishop of Bath and Wells, and his wife, Isabella (d. before 1584), the daughter of Nicholas Purefoy of Shalstone, Buckinghamshire.

The family of Purefoy, one of considerable antiquity, was seated at Misterton, in Leicestershire, as early as 1277.
PHILIP PUREFOY, m. Margaret, daughter and sole heir of Simon Shireford, of Shireford, and had two sons.
I. Thomas, of the Middle Temple, who purchased the manor of Drayton, in the county of Leicestershire, about the year 1397.He m. Katherine, daughter and heir of Whellesburgh, of Fenny Drayton, and was great-great-grandfather of
THOMAS PUREFOY, esq. of Drayton, who d. in 1542, leaving by Margery, his wife, daughter of Sir Ralph Fitzherbert, of Norbury, four sons and five daughters, viz.
1. Ralph, of Drayton, whose grandson, George Purefoy, esq. of Drayton, d. in 1593, leaving an only daughter and heir, Joyce, wife of Edward Purefoy, esq. of Shalleston.
