In researching my Quay's I came across a John Quay b. 8/22/1815 in NY and d. 9/27/1887 in Cass Co., MI.At 17 he moved with his family to Adrian, MI.He m. at abt. 25 yrs. a Harriet Coller who was b. 1813 in NY and they had 5 children. There is a book "The Love of Emeline - Where it came From ----Where it Went," by Vinetta Bell (Quay) Ling and edited by Annie Osborne.I got a copy through LDS.
There have been several John Quay's in this time period from NY and I believe they are out of the Qua's from Washington Co. NY who came over before the Revolution from Ireland. In one man that I tracked for a lady in California her Alvin was from these Qua's but in his C.W. papers insisted that the name was originally Quay.
In the 1830 Federal Census, 1st Ward, Albany, NY is listed a James Quay 1 M 15-20; 1 M 30-40; 1F under 5; 1 F 5 to 10; and 1F 20-30 with a note I wrote, may have gone to Niagara Co.
I have a James Qua, b. 11/1826 Lisbon, Pvt. 142 Inf. enlsted. 9/27/1862 - father Samuel, mother Mary Chambers. He was a farmer in Lisbon, NY.
None of my Quay's match up with your James.
Hope this helps.
Kit
