Thanks Christine,
It'll take me a while to reconstruct your interesting information. By the way George II built a house in Randwick, a suburb of Sydney & named it "Rathven". It still exists and I could be wrong but I think it is semi-listed for hisrtorical reasons and possibly belongs to the nearby University.
Interesting reading Terrance Raffan's comments. Way back in the past the Ruthven family got into trouble over some catholic dignatry assination conspiracy. The Ruthven's assets were seized and the name was officially "deleted" from history on pain of death as a warning to others.
Another odd thing Rathven ~ Ruthven is the similarity of spelling 'Rathven ~ Ruthven' (lost relationship). Also I have a reproduction of an old map (c 1750) that spells RUTHVEN as RAFFAN!
And then there are the Viking raiders - among whom the following names are quite common: Rafn, Hrafn (see the Sagas). Others see no connection in either of the above. Also 'ravn' means black as per the raven (bird) in one of the Nordic languages. The raven was a popular banner or herald for military purposes. Vikings are well kown for leaving their calling cards from sotland to Ireland and across to Greenlan/America.
