Greetings Leonard Pearsell. I am Thomas Raftery directly decended from Thomas Raftery the second son of Patrick Raftery and Mary Ganley.
Like you I have researced my familly history and would like to know more about Patrick Raftery and Mary Ganley.
Some interesting findings is that you say that Thomas's brother Michael was born in 1803, whereas Immigration records show his age as 48 in 1858 when he arrived with his familly, meens he was born in 1810.
Thomas had four sons Malachi, Thomas, Patrick and Michael and all but Patrick were baptised at St. Mary's Catholic Church Williamstown, where Patrick was baptised is still under investigation. Your Great Grand Father Malachi was baptised 20/10/1863, sponsored by Patrick and Mary Ann Holland.
I was told many years ago by my Grand Father that Thomas who died in 1868 was an accident involving a horse and cart where the wheel of the cart passed over his head as he was trying to pull the cart out of mud.
Further investigation has found that another Thomas Raftery also married in 1863 to Bridget Heffernan in Footscray, and they had a son also named Malachi born in 1864. I never knew this and only found out after my investigations into our familly tree, this coudnt be the wife and son of Thomas,s first marriage. Do you have information on this Thomas Raftery?
Thomas Raftery's decended from Thomas Raftery who immigrated from Ireland are Thomas 1865-1936, Thomas 1890-1966, Thomas 1916-1978, Thomas 1953-.
Have you got Immigration records of Thomas from Ireland, it is not clear when he immigrated here, what year, and who with. Do you know where his Farm at Footscray was located?
Being a direct decendant I have more information on Raftery's.
Regards Thomas Raftery the Fifth.
