There is always a problem of variations of spelling of surnames. Rakowski is no exception. The spelling Rakozy or Rakoczy probably stems from an unrelated family in either Hungary or Czechoslovakia. That family is quite famous and a great deal of information can be found in a variety of historical accounts dealing with Hungary. Another spelling variant, Rogowski, is also probably associated with unrelated families from the town of Rogowo in Poland. On the other hand, the variants Ratkowski, and Rokowski possibly have their roots in the same town of Rakow in the province of Kielce in Poland from which the name of Rakowski is derived.
