How interesting--My grandfather Lynne Oliver Ramer was an engineer and so is my brother. My uncles were both very handy in this area, designing houses and cabins.
My grandfather's branch came to American early; Matheas/Matheus Rohmer/Romer was born 1746 and was an Evangelical Lutheran. They were supposed to be from Palatine Germany.
The information gathered in the 60's by Grant Shadel, Jr. (son of Hannah Ramer) says that Hanz "the Reimer" was knighted by Emporer Fredrich Barbrossa of Lower Saxony in 1165 AD. He was known for his gift of rhyme and bravery. His descendents lost favor with the Emporer and lost the knighthood and became "roamers" changed to Ramer in America. It makes a good story. I do not know Grant Shadel's sources, but he has eight hand written pages of history!
