Henry RAMER (1804-1881), Perry Co., PA to DeKalb Co., IL
I am working on a family tree of the descendants of Henry RAMER (1804-1881) who was probably born at Buffaloe Township, Perry Co., PA and died at Pierce Township, DeKalb Co., Illinois. He married Susannah TROUP (1808-1877) in 1826 in probably Perry County, Pennsylvania. They were the parents of ten children. In 1833 the family moved to Richland County, Ohio and in 1847 to DuPage County, Illinois and in 1849 to DeKalb County, Illinois where they remained.I descend from their ninth child, Anthony RAMER (1842-1904), a Civil War Veteran. If anyone has any information to trade on this family, please contact me; [email protected]
From the research of cousin John RAMER of Monticello, Wisconsin I believe that my earliest known RAMER ancestor was Philip RAMER who came to Philadelphia, landing in 1727, from probably the Palatinate in Germany.Philip Sr. eventually settled in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.Philip's only known child was Philip RAMER Jr., who was born before 1737, probably in Pennsylvania.Philip Jr. was known to have three children: Abraham (b. 15 Aug 1760), Johannes (John) (09 Feb 1763 - 09 Oct 1838) and Philip III (b. c1764).Philip Sr. was thought to have been a Mennonite, and Philip Jr. may have been a member of the Church of the Brethren.John RAMER, who has done most of this research, is a descendant of the son Johannes RAMER.
When my great-great-grandfather Henry RAMER (1804-1881) married for the second and third times he gave his parents as Philip RAMER and Catherine WAGNER RAMER.We begin with them:

The birth and marriage dates for Philip III were conjectures by cousin Finley FITCH whom did not list his sources. There were probably other children.Henry RAMER gave his place of birth several times (during application for his second and thirdmarriages) as Berks County, Pennsylvania, so perhaps his father Philip was from there also.Family oral history seems to indicate that son Henry could have been born in Dauphin or Perry Counties also.Catherine was the daughter of Jacob WAGGONER Sr., who died in 1804.

Mary RAMER (1797-1880), daughter of Philip RAMER III, married George EBERLY (1793-1876) and moved to Pierce Township, DeKalb County, Illinois like her brother HENRY.
In 1790 the PHILIP REAMER family was living at the eastern portion of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. This area later became Perry County. The family included one male over 16 and three females.
In 1800 PHILIP REAMER and family was living in Buffaloe Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. There was one male 0 to 10, one male 26 to 45, two females 0 to 10, two females 10 to 16, and one female 26 to 45.
In the 1810 Buffaloe Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania census the following RAMER/REAMER families were living. This area became Perry County when Perry was created in 1820.
PHILIP REAMER:1 male 0 to 10 years of age
1 male 10 to 16 years of age
1 male 16 to 26 years of age
1 male over 45 years of age
1 female 10 to 16 years of age
1 female 16 to 26 years of age
1 female 26 to 45 years of age
JOHN REAMER:1 male over 45 years of age
1 female over 45 years of age
5 children
Living in the next county over from Cumberland, Dauphin, were ABRAM (ABRAHAM?) and NICHOLAS RAMER.However, in many cases the handwriting was very difficult to decipher and it is not surprising the name was not recognized by the person doing the census index.
------------
In the 1820 Federal Census of Buffaloe Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania, the following RAMER/REAMER families were listed:
JOHN REAMER:2 Males 18 to 26 years of age
1 Male 26 to 45 years of age
2 Females 16 to 26 years of age
1 Female over 45 years of age
JACOB REAMER:1 Male 0 to 10 years of age
1 Male 26 to 45 years of age
4 Females 0 to 10 years of age
1 Female 26 to 45 years of age
PHILIP REAMER: 1 Male 0 to 10 years of age
1 Male 18 to 26 years of age
1 Females 10 to 16 years of age
2 Females 16 to 26 years of age
Is this our PHILIP REAMER family? The totals and ages seem very wrong.Sometimes the censuses were very mixed up.Or perhaps this PHILIP REAMER is a brother of HENRY REAMER and a son of PHILIP REAMER.
--------------
In the 1830 Federal census of Buffaloe Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania, the following appeared on page 318:
HENRY REAMER:one male 10 to 15 years old
one male 20 to 30 years old
two females less than 5 years old
one female 20 to 30 years old
one female 40 to 50 years old
one female 60 to 70 years old
Is this the household of "our" HENRY RAMER (1804-1881)?Who are the male 10-15, and females 40-50 and 60-70?Was the older females the mothers of HENRY and SUSANNA?Was the younger male a brother of SUSANNA? or a Nephew?
Living next door to HENRY REAMER was:
GEORGE EBERLY: two males less than five years old
two males 10 to 15 years old
one male 30 to 40 years old
one female less than 5 years old
one female 5 to 10 years old
one female 10 to 15 years old
one female 30 to 40 years old
Living twelve houses away was:
JACOB REAMER:two males 5 to 10 years old
one male 10 to 15 years old
one male 40 to 50 years old
one female 5 to 10 years old
one female 10 to 15 years old
two females 15 to 20 years old
one female 40 to 50 years old
living another two houses away:
JOHN REAMER:two males 30 to 40 years old
one male 60 to 70 years old
one female 20 to 30 years old
And living in the town of _________, in Juniata Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania in 1830 was:
PHILIP REAMER: one male 15 to 20 years old
one male 20 to 30 years old
one female 20 to 30 years old
This PHILIP is too young to the father of "our" HENRY RAMER.

The Following Appeared in "PORTRAIT AND BIOGRAPHICAL ALBUM OF DEKALB COUNTY, ILLINOIS", Chapman Publ., Chicago, IL 1885
HENRY RAMER, deceased, formerly a farmer, resident of Pierce Township, was a pioneer settler of DeKalb County. He was born in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, August 8, 1804, and was there brought up and instructed in agricultural pursuits. His marriage to SUSANNAH TROUP occurred April 1, 1826.She was born November 2, 1808 in Dauphin County. In 1833 they emigrated to Ohio, moving there in an emigrant wagon, or "prairie schooner."Mr. RAMER purchased a tract of timber land in Richland County, Ohio, built a log house, and lived on the place until 1846, clearing and improving 65 acres. In 1846 he bought another place nearby, which he sold a year later and came to Illinois. The journey thither was accomplished by the aid of three horses, a pair of oxen and two wagons, and they bought with them their household goods and provisions. They were seventeen days on the road. They rented a farm in DuPage County, which they operated until 1849, when they settled in Township 39, Range 5E, which afterwards became Pierce Township.Mr. RAMER purchased 160 acres of land in it's original condition on Section 27.He built a frame house upon it, with lumber he hauled from DuPage County. In this house he lived until his death. His first wife died January 9, 1877.He married CATHERINE SMITH, who lived but five months after marriage.Mr. RAMER died in April 1881.He was the father of ten children by his first wife: MARIA, CATHERINE, PETER, LEVI, LAVINA, JOHN, HENRY, PHILIP, ANTHONY, and GEORGE.
--------------------------------------
Land grant records show that HENRY REAMER purchased 80 acres on April 27, 1833 at Richland County, Range 17, Township 25, East half of NE quarter, Section 19, and on April 29, 1833 40 acres in NW quarter of NE quarter of Section 19.At this time this area was called Clearcreek Township. When Ashland County was formed in 1848, Clearcreek Township was divided between Richland and Ashland and the part in Richland (where the RAMER farm had been located) was renamed Butler Township. This area is about ____ miles north of Olivesburg, and about the same distance NE of Shenandoah, about one mile from the Ashland County line.
