Second Mrs. Wharton Ransdell
Kathy and others please note. The second Mrs. Wharton Ransdell was NOT born Sarah Foxall.Kathy, you have collapsed two generations.Sarah Foxall Elliott did marry (2) Andrew Monroe, but he was her last husband. She died as Mrs. Monroe, as her Westmoreland Co. will shows. She had a daughter Miss Sarah Elliott, who m. (1) Wm. Sturman and (2) Wharton Ransdell.See the two articles entitled "Sturman Family Notes" in the 1936 and 1937 William and Mary Quarterly.I believe I'll be able to furnish you below the will of Sarah Monroe
Westmoreland Co. Deeds and Wills 9, p. 33, (transcribed by Ruth and Sam Sparacio on p. 106 of Deed and Will Abstracts of Westmoreland Co., Va., 1736-1740, published McLean, Va., The Antient Press, 1995).Will of Sarah Monroe, written 26 July 1739, probate 27 Nov. 1739.Includes legacies to five grandchildren:Elizabeth Sturman, Sarah Sturman, Martha Sturman, THOMAS RANSDELL, SARAH ELLIOTT RANSDELL (who m. Joseph Pierce). She also mentioned children John Elliott, Sibella Elliott, grandson JOhn Elliott, Mr. Wharton Ransdell, DAUGHTER SARAH RANSDELL (widow of Wharton).Note that she had to have died before 27 Nov. 1739.And here follows the will of Mrs. Sarah (nee Elliott) Sturman Ransdell, dau. of the above Mrs. Sarah Foxall Elliott Monroe:
Will of Sarah Ransdell, wr. 8 Oct. 1778, pr. 27 March 1781, Westmoreland Co. Will Book 16:
dau. Sarah Elliott Pierce, grdau. Martha Pierce, grandson Elliott Sturman, son-in-law Joseph Pierce. For further proof, note that Wharton Ransdell her late husband also mentioned their daughter Sarah Elliott Pierce.
You could be right about the Monroe statement you made.I'm always wary there because there was a Spence Monroe in the President's line and another Spence in another line, and people often confuse the two.
Do you need further proof?Let me know if you do.
What is your Ransdell descent, Kathy?
