My field of interest is the Ratti family from Premana (Lecco, Lombardy), with branches in Venice and Montevideo (Uruguay). My attempt to reconstruct its genealogy (from early 15th century up to now) met with success. I will be grateful, in all cases, for any information about.
Currently, there are about 3,000 Ratti families in Italy, mostly in the NW (Liguria, Piedmont, Lombardy); from here, they spread into other Italian regions, other European countries, and also North & South America and Australia.
The first and the most ancient Ratti family is RATTI "MENTONE", from Menton (Mentone) near Nice (Nizza), presently France but formerly Italy. Firstly recorded in 11th century. A primary branch in Cherasco (Cuneo, Piedmont); counts of Cherasco; Oddino Ratti was vicarious of Cuneo in 1364. A branch is Ratti di Torre Rossano; marquises; originally in Trino (Vercelli, Piedmont), then in Cherasco. A further branch, with residence in Brianza (Milan), originated Pope Pio XI (Achille Ratti).
A second, important Ratti family is RATTI "OPIZZONI" or "OPPIZZONE", with residence in Tortona (Piedmont), secondary residences in Turin, Reggio Emilia, etc. Firstly recorded in Tortona in 13th century: Livio de Ratti, consul, mentioned in 1221. In the year 1423, the Duke of Milan decided to enfeoff the brothers Antonio & Giovanni Ratti (Opizzoni) with properties in Borghetto di Borbana (Alessandria, Piedmont), including Castel de Ratti, Torre Ratti, Cerreto Ratti. Borgoratto Alessandrino (a village near Alessandria) was mentioned in 1237 as "Burgum Ratti" (village of Ratti). A branch had residence in Piacenza (Giovanni Giacomo and Zanino Ratti, 1558). A further branch in Voghera (Pavia), where there is the village Borgoratto Marmarolo.
A third Ratti family (possibly related to the first two) is firstly recorded in Genua in the year 1159; nobles. In the surroundings of Genua there still are localities such Forte Ratti, Borgo Ratti, Via Ratti.
I suppose that most Ratti families in Italy and abroad were originated by this three families.
