Genealogy is new to me, but I've begun looking through some records that family members sent.
MY MATERNAL GRANDMOTHER:Culena Reburta Thorne born Friendly Md, August 1892.
HER MOTHER:Mary Theresa (or Teresa) Raum born Maryland August 1862.Died December 31, 1936.Buried Providence United Methodist Church Cemetary, Friendly, Md.
PARENTS OF MARY THERESA (OR TERESA) RAUM:
=Carolyn Hoek
=George Raum born 8 May 1826 Bavaria, Germany... died April 1901 Broad Creek, Prince Georges County Md.George Raum arrived in the US 9 Nov 1843 at the age of 17 at the Port of Baltimore on the ship Bohl Bohlen, which had departed from Bremen, Germany. He arrived with his parents and three sisters.Their former residence was in Riegelsetein
(Riegelstein?) Germany.
GEORGE RAUM'S PARENTS:
Johan Raum born about 1797
Margaretha Loos born about 1795.
------------------------
From my grandmother, Culena, we heard the story that the Raums had been Catholic in Germany. At some point after their arrival in the U.S. Carolyn Hoek Raum or the whole Raum family visited a Catholic church in New Jersey or New York (I recall New York, but another family member recalls New Jersey -- but the story is the same). She or they entered a pew to pray, but someone informed her/them the pews were assigned to parishoners who rented them. The Raum family member(s) were so upset about the requirement to pay for a pew, that they never again went in a Catholic church, so the story goes.
From a separate source (years ago, a family member did some research of ships logs at the National Archives, I believe), I received the names of George Raum's siblings who came with him on the ship to the US.One of the siblings I remember was named Koenig. This stands in my mind because I had started studying German at the time and koenig is the
German word for "king".I thought that was an interesting name.I may still have these notes somewhere, but it could take a long time to uncover them.I visited the genforum.com discussion on Raum just recently for the first time.Someone in that forum stated earlier a different name than Koenig as one of George's sisters on the ship with him and the parents. With that in mind, I can only guess that I got "Koenig" because possibly it was a nickname someone heard from an oral history or someone mis-wrote the name in the more recent past (e.g., maybe my source mis-wrote it, I don't know).I also had the recollection that Koenig was a brother.Sorry for the confusion.Maybe one day when I have more leisure, I can look for ships logs myself.
I'd love to hear what you know about the Raums and how you are connected.Ruth, I tried to email you, but the email address you have registered at genforum bounced.
